President Mike Pence Would Be Worse Than Trump
Pence has spent months in the spotlight following a dispute with former President Donald Trump over the former vice president's decision to certify the results of the 2020 election. But Pence's increased activity -- including stops in key early primary states and planned appearances at traditional Republican rallies -- shows how he's starting to lay the groundwork for a potential race. to exist in the future.
His schedule includes two stops in Texas next week, according to a person familiar with the plans. In September, Pence will speak at the Mackinac GOP Leadership Conference, a biennial event on Mackinac Island, Michigan, that has long attracted presidential candidates.
People familiar with Pence's plans say they hope he can help other Republicans prepare for the 2022 election, including governors. Pence, the former governor of Indiana, is close to Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey, chairman of the Republican Governors Association. Ducey has also come under fire from Trump recently, with the former president accusing him of not providing enough support to a recently launched investigation into the state's election results.
On Thursday, Pence delivered his first speech since leaving office in January in Columbia, South Carolina, where he addressed the Palmetto family, an evangelical group. In his speech, Pence visited the Trump administration's record and criticized an "aggressive" Biden White House.
South Carolina could be a key focus for Pence if he runs for president because of his large conservative Christian base, a group the former vice president has long courted.
