Mig 29 Dogfight - Author Dave Bio Baranek certainly knows a thing or two about military aircraft, having been a former F-14 RIO and Topgun instructor.
Since retiring from the US Navy over twenty years ago, he is now one of the hosts of the new F-14 Tomcast podcast series. A recent appearance by former F-14 pilot and Topgun instructor Sam "Slammer" Richardson, now retired from the US, according to the Aviation Geek Club. Navy Captain.

Baranek noted that "the story that is sure to get the most attention is when Slammer describes an unforgettable 1v1 exercise against a Luftwaffe MiG-29 Fulcrum in the late 1990s when attached to VF-14 Tophatters."

Richardson delved even deeper into his personal experience. “One day I fought a MiG-29. The first fight I'll never forget didn't go well for me. I tried aggressive pressure and failed miserably."
What happened after the first engagement? "I'm going through my mind," he said. "What should I do? I realized I can't fight the plane, but I have to fight the pilot."
Then came the second engagement. “I flew directly under him on purpose. I knew he was aggressive and sure enough he bit. I saw his two lighters. Probably doing five hundred knots, straight down, with both afterburners. And I thought, 'I get it!' I got to the top, moved my nose, and I'm looking at the bow MiG-29,” Richardson mentioned.
Baranek claimed that "Slammer used his knowledge of the limitations of his opponent's aircraft to put himself in an advantageous situation. ... He forced the MiG-29 pilot to call out 'Knock it out'." He later said that the Fulcrum pilot could only talk about how he lost the battle against the Tomcat."

Richardson added: "I got inside his head. It's not the quality of the box that matters. It's the quality of the person in it."
Podcast co-host Craig "Crunch" Snyder noted that "Slammer had a game plan for the matchup, thinking two or three moves ahead."
"When he earned his Wings of Gold, there were no F-14 seats available, so his commanding officer directed him to a program where he would temporarily teach other students," Baranek writes.
“They wouldn't teach you tricks. You had to learn the basics: power management ... where Tomcat had an advantage ... and a weakness,” he said.

“The Tomcat is a very easy aircraft to fly. But it is a very, very difficult plane to fly well," he added.

Built To Counter The F 15 Eagle, Russia's Mig 29 Fulcrum Still Kills
At about two miles I looked again, but didn't think about the shot before the merge. Instead, I intended to merge with the bogie just 50 yards off his left wing. "When I crossed his wing line, I saw that the jet was actually a brown-green camouflaged Iraqi MiG-29," said Captain Cesar 'Rico' Rodriguez, a former F-15 pilot.
The interesting video in this post tells the story of one of the most exciting engagements of the entire Operation Desert Storm.
January 19, 1991, Captain Cesar "Rico" Rodriguez and his companion, Captain Craig "Mole" Underhill, both F-15C Eagle pilots with the 58th TFS/33. The TFW conducted a fighter attack in front of the strike force of F-16s and F./A-18s when the AWACS controller directed them towards a single spray threat.
As explained by Steve Davies in his book F-15C Eagle Units in Combat, within minutes Rodriguez was locked onto radar by an approaching MiG-29, forcing him to turn away from the enemy aircraft and destroy his targeting solution. Underhill reinforced his mid-flight advantage by firing an AIM-7 Sparrow semi-active radar-guided air-to-air missile (and not a heat-seeking missile, as the video claims) that headed straight for the Iraqi plane.

As Rodriguez returned to the burning MiG after the AWACS controller spotted a second emerging threat, he picked up this second contact from the mission:
We received another call from the western AWACS, at which time we made a control turn to the north. I looked up and saw a trail of smoke—not a trail of projectiles, but engine smoke—and "The Mole" and I locked him in at the same time. We started flipping through our ID matrix and the target kindly returned to both of us electronically. I was now directing the VID pass, looked about four miles out and spotted a silhouette that looked very much like an F-15 or F/A-18, so I didn't declare it hostile. At about two miles I looked again but gave no more thought to the shot before the merge. Instead, I intended to merge with the bogie just 50 yards off his left wing. As I crossed the line of its wing, I saw that the jet was actually a brown-green camouflaged Iraqi MiG-29.'
In the patch that followed, Rodriguez successfully positioned himself behind the "Fulcrum" and chased the plane to the desert floor, where the MiG hit the ground and spun for several miles.
