The M240 variants do not replace all of the M60 models, although they are available for many of the original applications and functions. The Navy still uses the M60 in some cases.
As of March 2022, the US Army is looking for an M240 6.8×51mm conversion kit to convert the 7.62×51mm NATO chambered M240B and M240L general purpose rifles to fire 6.8×51mm ammunition.

The flame size can be controlled by three different gas control settings. The first setting allows the weapon to fire 650-750 rounds per minute, the second setting 750-850 rounds per minute, and the third setting 850-950 rounds per minute.
These settings are changed by removing the barrel, removing the gas control valve and changing the gas control to move more or more gas through the weapon system. The manufacturer's designation for the weapon is MAG 58. The M240 conforms to the specifications of the FN MAG-58, allowing for interchangeability of parts with other standard MAG-58s.
