Santikos On Military - As state and local governments ease business restrictions, theaters in San Antonio and across the country are slowly coming back to life.

In San Antonio, City Pace Cinemas has announced the reopening of the South Side Theater on Friday, May 15 at 25% capacity with open seating between parties. Guests will be pre-screened, but masks are not required to enter. EVO Entertainment locations in Schertz and Kyle have opened under similar guidance, and Stars and Stripes Drive-In in New Braunfels is also open for business.

Santigo's Entertainment opened its three biggest venues (Casa Blanca, Palladium, Cibolo) on May 1. Managing director of sales and marketing Andrew Brooks says his limited capacity forecasts were operationally successful, although traffic was running "about 15%". Let it go if we are fully open at the same time.” Santigo's Entertainment plans to reopen the Mayan Palace Theater on Thursday, May 21.

I caught up with Brooks on the phone to find out a little more about what it's like to go to the movies now and what's ahead for the movies. This conversation has been edited for clarity and length.

Santikos CEO Tim Handren noted in a Facebook Live video that laid-off employees are still receiving medical benefits. I assume this is for full time?

Yes sir that is correct. If someone qualifies for the benefits package, whatever they choose, Santigos covers 100 percent of the costs while they are suspended.

So it's basically a permit for them until their specific location opens up? How does it work?

Bill's Elves: Donate New Unwrapped Toys To Give Children A Little Extra Holiday Cheer

Little. When we opened those first three locations, we reached out to those specific employees first, and 85% said they wanted to come back. Others, as Tim mentions in the video, gave good reasons why they weren't ready. They had a partner who worked in nursing or a hospital, and they weren't comfortable. They were the caretakers of elderly relatives. And some people had underlying conditions themselves that are on top of what you might see for high risk. So we really respect those (results). So we had to go elsewhere (for staff). But when we open a location and bring it back online, we start with the core team working there.

Are you worried about what will happen if you have to close again? What does this mean for business?

To say we're not worried about it wouldn't be true. So what we did was to avoid being closed again. All the safety precautions you've seen and heard are meant to prevent us from going back... We helped write the National Association of Theater Owners white paper on how to reopen. Five more chains announced their openings across the country yesterday. Yesterday we were in Texas a lot. Strike + Reel... Synergy opens... So we have to be responsible in how we open. Not just us, but all the other businesses, to make sure we can stay open.

Looking for a new title? Obviously, it's not a big deal, since all the "Mulans" and "Black Widows" of the world have been ruled out, but will they show any new footage that might slip through the cracks, or will it mostly be a second run? Titles or classics, how do you describe them?

Santikos' Cibolo Theater Celebrates Anniversary With $1 Tickets Tuesday, Wednesday

In fact, we're going to have five new titles next week. One of them is "How to Make a Woman", which sounds like a good topic. "Army Wives" is another. And then we're in talks for three more, which we can announce. And then the other big news, the action thriller movie "Unhinged" with Russell Crowe... they actually moved their release date to July 1st. So it looks like this will be the studio's first major release for now. So it looks like Warner Bros. and Christopher Nolan are going to make "Dennett" (in July) and then Disney comes out and says they're determined to keep "Mulan." I will also say that next week we will announce a very good series. We are working on a military series. We are working on a comedy series. We are also working on a superhero series with the "Fast and Furious" series.

And in the Facebook Live video you were also taking some suggestions from the audience. Is it still something anyone can do?

We'd love to hear suggestions. You know…the overall experience, their likes and dislikes. Perhaps a suggestion of contact or security points. And then of course suggestions on what we can play inside the theater. We are all ears.

This reminds me of a security question because it's not clear. Masks are voluntary when inside the theater, but what about in the lobbies and other areas? Do you strongly suggest, recommend or demand?

Here Are The Movie Theaters Open And Playing 'the Outpost'

We recommend masks, but now they are voluntary. The reason we did that is because first, we need to understand what a mask is for, which is to prevent your germs from spreading. That's why all our employees always wear appropriate personal protective equipment. But when we set up the theater, as you walk through it, you'll see poker chips (larger) on the floor across the bathroom (to guide distance). Thus, the entire theater was organized. Once you walk in the door, when you sit down for a movie, you're at least six feet away from anyone.

It was really exciting because we were watching people. We get feedback every day from guests and our staff and everyone buys it because we reserve the right to make (masks) mandatory at any time. So anytime we get complaints... or something happens, we reserve that right anywhere in the city to make masks mandatory. But now, they are voluntary for guests, and all of our staff wear personal protective equipment at all times.
