Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery is the sixth National Veterans Cemetery in New York State and the 116th in the National Cemetery Administration.

More than 1.4 million veterans live in New York and more than 225,000 live in the Albany/Saratoga area. The first phase of construction, which covered 60 acres of the 351-acre cemetery, included 5,000 grave sites, 2,000 turf fields, 1,500 columbarium niches and 700 garden niches for cremated remains. At full capacity, Solomon-Saratoga can provide burial space for 175,500 eligible veterans and dependents.

Saratoga Is Home To The Gerald B. H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery

Dedicated July 9, 1999 as Saratoga National Cemetery. On January 24, 2002, President George W. Bush signed legislation renaming Saratoga National Cemetery the Gerald B. H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery. Congressman Solomon was known as a champion for veterans. Among his accomplishments are efforts to create the government's Department of Veterans Affairs, and he successfully led efforts to establish the national cemetery where he is now buried.

USS Saratoga, CV-3, was launched in 1925 and spent 20 years at sea, including action during World War II. The bell was first displayed at the Saratoga Spring Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Memorial Home, dedicated on Veterans Day the year it was restored and permanently housed at the Gerald B.H. Saratoga Solomon National Cemetery.

The American Gray Granite Memorial was erected in 2001 to honor veterans from Saratoga County, NY. The memorial contains two granite slabs on which are approximately 980 names of individuals who gave their lives for their country. In front of the monument is a granite obelisk.

The Black Mite Pyramid Memorial to the Gerald B.H. Conference. Solomon, who was instrumental in establishing the national cemetery and an advocate for veterans' causes, was taken in 2002, the year the cemetery was renamed in his honor.

The cemetery also has a path with several memorials erected by various veterans and fraternal organizations to honor the events and fallen comrades.

Saratoga Military Cemetery

The Veterans Administration is in the midst of the largest expansion of the nation's cemeteries since the Civil War. It began expanding in 1999 with a cemetery in Saratoga and has since opened 18 new cemeteries. A further 17 are planned over the next 3 to 5 years, depending on funding.

Dar Selling Wreaths For Placement At National Veterans Cemetery In Saratoga

VA plans to open two new national cemeteries in New York; a full-size cemetery in Pembroke, near Buffalo, and a columbarium-only site in Queens, part of the VA's Urban Initiative.

The VA originally acquired 351.7 acres in Saratoga and developed approximately 60 acres. Another 9/29 has since been developed to add more columbariums and cemeteries, giving the cemetery room for 175,000 graves.

All burials at all national cemeteries are scheduled through the National Cemeteries Administration in St. Louis, Missouri. St. Louis, MO.

U.S. Representative Gerald B.H. Solomon did not want the Saratoga National Cemetery to be named after him. It was after his death in 2001 that Congress passed a renaming bill. Local veterans were angry.

There are six national veterans cemeteries in New York State. Only three are open for the first burial of remains in caskets and cremated remains.

Calverton National Cemetery is located in Suffolk County, Long Island. In fiscal year 2014, nearly 6,000 funerals were held here.

Long Island National Cemetery in Farmingdale, established in 1936, is open to retired members and second burials only. In fiscal year 2014, 1,831 were buried.
