SKS is a gas-operated gun, meaning it uses the gas produced when the cartridge is fired to open the lock and cycle through the piston rod. At the moment of firing, the bolt carrier is pushed back, releasing the bolt, which allows the fired shell to be ejected and store new ammunition. Most SKS variants feature a free-floating firing pin inside the breech, which means that special care must be taken when cleaning the gun to ensure that the firing pin can move freely. SKS firing pin stuck in the breech has been known to cause the gun to fire accidentally. This is called "slamfire". This is less likely to happen if the owner of the SKS uses the military ammunition the SKS is designed for, but regardless, be careful when cleaning the gun.
