At this point you probably know the basics of the Jeep Cherokee Trackhawk: The Hellcat engine is stuffed inside the Grand Cherokee's engine bay like stuffing a turkey. But it's not really as easy as throwing in a super powerful engine, is it? I sat down with Darryl Smith, director of SRT Engineering, and Paul Mackiewicz, Trackhawk vehicle integration manager, to learn more about what makes a supercharged SUV.

There's a big, very attractive "LAUNCH" button on the center console, but it doesn't work until the odometer goes over 500 miles. Then again, it's not like the Hellcat's engine is brand new when the car leaves the lot: Each engine goes through a rigorous 42-minute dyno test before being installed in the car.

Mackiewicz recommends about 2,200 rpm for a good start in most areas. The launch control menu on the touchscreen allows you to select the launch engine speed from 1,500 to 3,500 rpm. Then mix the brake and the throttle, release the brake, and hold. Like the Demon (and Dodge Challenger / Charger Hellcats), launch control activates Torque Reserve, which fills the front of the supercharger and intake manifold with pressurized air for maximum power as soon as you leave the line.
The Grand Cherokee SRT (with 'only' 475 horsepower) or the 707-hp Trackhawk have no power limitations. But both defy the laws of aerodynamics, putting the former's top speed at 160 miles per hour and the Trackhawk at a staggering 180 mph. For reference, the Aerodynamic Charger Hellcat can hit 204 mph and the Challenger Hellcat runs up to 199 mph.
The Trackhawk's engine puts out the same 707 horsepower as the Dodge Charger/Challenger Hellcat twins, but 645 lb-ft compared to 650 lb-ft in the Dodge models. That's because of the increased exhaust path restriction required by the Grand Cherokee platform. Considering this 5-pound, 363-pound SUV still sprints to 60 mph in 3.5 seconds, we don't have to worry about those 5 pounds.
Not the biggest of any Fiat Chrysler Automobiles product (heavy-duty trucks need big brakes), but the biggest of all for Jeep. They are 15.75-inch rotors in the front, compared to 15.0-inch on the Grand Cherokee SRT. The structural improvement was necessary to accommodate the "thermal load" of stopping from the Trackhawk's 180 mph speed, Mackiewicz said. In other words, they burn.

Mounted on the front driver's side fascia, an air-to-air cooler helps cool the V8. "The 6.2 has more oil temperature," Smith said. A removable hood helps with cooling, too; the slot in the front fascia has been integrated into the 2017 Grand Cherokee, part of the future-proof Trackhawk system.
It is used to reduce unpleasant sounds and thus has a different profile in each driving mode; in Tow, for example, it helps reduce droning or lugging sounds, while Track and Sport sound sportier.
First, the Trackhawk uses ZF's 8HP95 automatic transmission, which is a version of the 8HP90 all-wheel drive used in Dodge Hellcats. Its halfshafts are larger and stronger, and the Magna all-wheel-drive system has also been improved.

That's because, Smith and Mackiewicz say, the SUV's rear aerodynamic balance is in the middle of a lift-topper but it doesn't have a supercharged V8.
Introduced in 2018, the Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk is one of the most powerful regular production vehicles available for purchase today. It's also incredibly quick off the line with a 0 to 60 miles per hour (0 to 96 kilometers per hour) acceleration time of 3.5 seconds. Unfortunately, you may have a few months left if you want to buy the all-new Grand Cherokee Trackhawk because the range-topping range will be discontinued for the new model year.

A new Trackhawk is unlikely to happen. Initially, the automaker had plans for a new supercharged V8 model but the Stellantis electrification push and ever-increasing emissions regulations forced the company to rethink its strategy.

In fact, there may be a new Trackhawk later in the model's life cycle but it won't have a supercharged V8 powertrain. However, according to rumors, it may use a combined 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six engine with up to 525 horsepower (391 kilowatts) and quick torque delivery thanks to the electric motor. Although this number is nowhere near the 707 hp (527 kW) of the current Trackhawk, the gap can be closed with hybrid technology and its power delivery.
Another non-electric engine is used in the new Grand Cherokee. Spotted testing on public roads last month, the 4xe version will reportedly use the same powertrain as the Wrangler 4xe. If it turns out to be true, the SUV will get a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine supported by two electric motors to produce 375 horsepower (280 kilowatts) and 470 pound-feet (673 Newton-meters) torque.
